About Brevard Montessori School

Brevard Montessori is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit alliance of parents and teachers devoted to providing the highest quality Montessori education.  It is our mission to provide a learning environment for children that strives to follow the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori and to provide a nurturing community where children develop a love of learning and grow in the spirit of curiosity.

Brevard Montessori School (BMS)  provides a specially prepared environment geared to the size, pace and interest of children between the age of eighteen months and six years of age.  The program is designed to cultivate the child's own natural curiosity and love of learning as well as to enable the child to develop more fully the potential within him/her.  It is the pledge of BMS to be philosophically based in the Montessori Method and maintain a classroom environment that will meet the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of the child.

The Montessori Method is based on the premise that education should be an aid to life.  In order to develop their physical, intellectual, and spiritual powers to the fullest, children must have freedom- freedom to be achieved through order and self-discipline.  Respect for a child's personality and trust in his inner potential are prerequisite to the foundation of an adequate educational alliance.  The Montessori Method is designed to assist the child in developing the skills and self-confidence needed to fulfill his/her potential.

The Montessori classroom is a prepared environment equipped with specially designed and sequenced materials.  The materials have a long-range as well as an immediate purpose for giving specific information to the child.  The materials help develop basic problem solving and observation techniques as well as classical academic achievement.  Beginning in the "concrete" the child uses manipulative materials and gradually works toward conceptualization, or the "abstract".

Montessori is a way of life encompassing the development of the whole child. Parents have a vital role in the education process of their children.  Parent involvement in the Montessori classroom is important in the development of a sense of community between home and school.

The Montessori Method of education is a unique series of three year learning cycles designed to take advantage of a child's sensitive periods for learning.

A child who acquires the basic skills of reading and arithmetic in a natural way, has the advantage of beginning their education without drudgery, boredom or disappointment.  By being able to pursue their individual interests in a Montessori classroom, each child is able to gain self confidence and develop an early enthusiasm for learning, which is the key to becoming a truly educated person. A good educational beginning never ends.
